The Port of Tripoli: history
Tripoli has been a Mediterranean port since antiquity, trading across the eastern Mediterranean under Phoenician, Roman, Crusader, Mamluk, and Ottoman rule. The port at Al-Mina remains central to the city’s identity, today combining fishing, commerce, and seafront life.
Why was the port important?
Its coastal position made Tripoli a trade gateway for North Lebanon and the interior for thousands of years.
The medieval city even split between an inland Mamluk core and the coastal harbor at Al-Mina.
